The week that was…

Normally I wouldn’t give much exposure to the latest leadership speculation stories, arising as they seem to do regularly in the days leading up to the latest Newspoll. But Tanner’s intervention this week was notable not only for its timing but also for the issues that he raises. Not that he proffered any solutions.

I’ve also included some good analysis pieces following the past parliamentary fortnight, and pieces by Tingle and Jericho to remind us about the importance of the economy in all things political. There’s also a link to the AFR Magazine’s annual Power List (which as far as I can tell is outside the paywall.

The week that was….

Considered political analysis was thin on the ground for most of this week, obsessed as the media was with rogue polls, rogue MPs and a predictable parliamentary defeat for marriage equality.

Thankfully, the Friday and weekend columns delivered some quality analysis on where the Government and the Opposition go from here, much of which you will find below.

I’ve also included a number of think-pieces as well as informative pieces from our trusted economics translators Jericho, Irvine and Megalogenis.

The week that was….

Well it was a funny old week. The PM was absent to grieve the death of her father, Abbott was mostly absent due to the wall-punch allegations, and Rudd reminded us all of his existence.

All just before Newspoll goes back into the field….

The week that was…

This week we had Gonski, Cubbie and the musings of Malcolm*. There was scurrilous talk about an early election. Antony Green explained which party would benefit from going early, with only the House of Reps MPs facing the electorate.

David Marr’s Quarterly Essay on Tony Abbott was released. To even things up, The Australian did a profile on Christine Milne.

Meanwhile, Tim Dunlop and Jonathan Green did their usual sterling work in providing us with crunchy brain food.

The week that was…

It was a HUGE week politically, jammed chock-full with political trade-offs, policy announcements and tragic deaths. The previous week’s political fascination with Tony Abbott’s truthiness had mostly passed, with questions now being raised over the challenge of either party delivering costly new policies when tax receipts are falling.

There were some interesting pieces on how the leaders are faring, quite a bit of soul searching on our continued presence in Afghanistan, and an insightful piece on the scrapping of the floor price for carbon. The additional good reads ponder the purpose of SBS’s Go Back to Where You Came From, feature Shaun Carney’s last piece as he departs the good ship Fairfax, and provide a profile of Greens’ leader Christine Milne.
